A quarter of a century is a long, long time for anything. Think marriage. Or working for the same company. Or living in the same house. But in the challenging magazine industry, 25 years is an eternity. One can think of myriad magazines that have come and go over the years, but for those with an interest in reading about Calgary’s business community (ergo everyone), Business in Calgary magazine has been the go-to publication for two and a half decades.
Such a magnificent milestone is cause for celebration and that is exactly what more then 350 guests of the iconic publication did Sept 3 at the Calgary Petroleum Club.
The event brought together prominent Calgarians who have appeared on past covers along with new and longtime local entrepreneurs. Highlights of the evening included speeches from the first editor and one of the first owners of Business in Calgary, John Challice and Calgary Flames President and CEO Ken King.
A great video montage included glimpses into the past along with inspiring words for the future from Ken King, Doug Mitchell, George Brookman, Jim Kinnear and Sue Riddell Rose.
Some of the best entrepreneurial stories the world has to offer have been told in Business in Calgary. In the words of publisher Pat Ottmann: ‘We have been fortunate to have met and worked with so many accomplished business leaders and entrepreneurs. To our families, friends, supporters and encouragers, our community partners and to those who have shared your stories: thank you.”
Among the more than 350 guests in attendance this night were: Fortune Industries’ Lou MacEachern; GDI Servpro’s Fred Edwards; Emergo chairman Alfred Balm and his son, managing director Dr. Mike Balm; MNP’s Trevor and Rochelle Winkler; Lammle’s Western Wear & Tack’s Barry and Marie Lammle; Wood Automotive Group’s Gerry Wood; Supreme Men’s Wear’s Darren and Charli Biedermann; Prestige Railings & Stairs’ Blaine and Rosellyn Wickerson; Haskayne School of Business’ Jim Dewald with Danya Dewald; West Canadian Digital Imaging’s George Brookman and Irene Price; Foothills Industrial Products’ Rich Waller and his wife Jane McCaig; and Engel & Volkers’ Zak Miller with Saima Chaudhri.
