The statistics are shocking indeed. Worldwide, more then 663 million people lack access to safe drinking water. Every day, 1,000 children are dying from diseases linked to a lack of clean water and sanitation. Thank goodness then for UNICEF. In 2014, UNICEF provided clean water to 13.8 million people in the poorest communities in addition to providing 18 million people with water in emergencies.
And the enormous success of the 23rd Annual UNICEF Water for Life Gala held Oct 3 at the Hyatt will ensure UNICEF’s life-saving contributions continue. The SRO event (658 guests, to be precise) raised a phenomenal $964,000-nothing short of astounding especially in these challenging economic times.
Highlights of the event were numerous including: a four-course dinner created by Hyatt Regency Calgary Chef David Flegel; an electric performance by Juno award winner and Calgarian, Kiesza; more than 140outstanding auction items; and an inspiring keynote speech by UNICEF Canada Ambassador, Bayan Yammout, who spoke of her remarkable story of survival as a child born in Lebanon during the civil war where she spent 17 years witnessing first-hand what it means to be a child impacted by conflict.
Among the guests in attendance at the glam gala were: Sue Riddell Rose, UNICEF Water for Life honorary chair and CEO of Perpetual Energy Inc. and her husband, Mike Rose CEO of Tourmaline Oil Corp; Kent Ferguson, UNICEF Water for Life Patrons Council member and managing director RBC Capital Markets and his wife Carrie; Wayne Whitlock, partner Bennett Jones LLP and his wife Penny, UNICEF Water for Life Patrons Council member; Dr. Michael Giuffre, pediatric cardiologist and his wife Heather, co-chair of the gala and their daughter Christina Giuffre, head of the gala greeting committee; Leontine Atkins, UNICEF Water for Life Patrons Council member and partner, KPMG LLP; Randy Pettipas, UNICEF Water for Life Patrons Council member and president and CEO, Global Public Affairs and his wife Luba; John Cordeau, partner Bennett Jones LLP and his wife Justice Carolyn Phillips; Chris Simard, partner Bennett Jones LLP and UNICEF Canada board member and his wife Hanita, gala co-chair; Alister Cowan, UNICEF Water for Life Patrons Council member and CFO Suncor Energy and his wife Karla; emcee Sussanne Fox and her husband Andrew; UNICEF Canada president and CEO David Morley; UNICEF Canada board member Peter Wallis and his wife Terry; UNICEF Canada national events manager Holly Davidson and her daughter Diane Davidson, gala auction chair; Dr. James Stone and his wife Dr. Pamela Stone; Nevsun Resources’ Joe Giuffre and his wife Marcela; Calgary Municipal Land Corporation chairman Lyle Edwards and his wife Patti; and Brant Randles and his wife Margo.
