A great city is made even greater by the accomplishments-and giving-of it’s citizens. And great citizens is what Calgary is known for. One need look no further for shining examples of same than those inducted into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame-a marvelous initiative started twelve years ago by Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta.
Since its inception, business leaders the likes of Jim Gray, Bud McCaig, Doc Seaman, Harley Hotchkiss and Dick Haskayne-to name but a few- have been inducted into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame for their lifetime achievements. Through their vision, citizenship, business acumen, entrepreneurial spirit and gifts of time and treasure, these Calgarians serve as vital mentors for today’s youth-the leaders of tomorrow.
Scores of business, government and community leaders gathered at the Hyatt Regency Oct 22 to honour four legendary entrepreneurs as they were inducted into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame. Joining the illustrious list of previous honourees are: John Dielwart; Keith MacPhail; Doug Ramsay; and the late Ralph T. Scurfield. Proceeds from the event benefit Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta (JASA). JASA provides business and leadership programs to youth throughout Southern Alberta-at not cost to the students nor their parents.
In attendance among the record number of guests (more than 800) were: JASA president and CEO Scott Hillier; JASA board chairman Gerard McInnis; JASA’s Cheryl Hamelin and Melissa From; WestJet board chairman and 2013 inductee Clive Beddoe; Donald and Marilou Seaman; Wildrose Leader Brian Jean and his fiancee Kimberley Michelutti; JASA board of governors chair Arlene Dickinson; 2009 inductee Allan Markin and his wife Patricia; philanthropist and community leader Ann McCaig with her sister Joan Cameron, brother Buzz Schnell and his wife Jenny Schnell; JASA volunteer and board member extraordinaire, 98-year young Doug Fraser and his wife Carol Fraser; Human Resources Institute of Alberta (HRIA) CEO Chris McNelly with HRIA chair Cheryl Oishi; Sunshine Village CEO Ralph Scurfield; Kendra Scurfield; Sonia Scurfield, attending and accepting the honour on behalf of her late husband Ralph T.
