Bill Brooks: Third time the charm for Heart Truth Calgary

Here’s a fact I suspect many of you do not know. Women are more likely than men to die of a heart attack or stroke. The good news is that if women put their own health first by making lifestyle changes, they can reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke by as much as 80 per cent-according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. 

Protecting ones heart health was the resounding message as celebrated Canadians, top fashion designers and survivors joined forces Feb 11 at Eighth Avenue Place for Calgary’s third-edition of the Heart Truth Fashion Show national campaign. The visually stunning fashion show featured Canadian celebrities from the worlds of sports, health, business, fitness, beauty, music and media, modeling one-of-a-kind red creations by top Canadian fashion designers. This year, celebrities shared the spotlight with survivors of heart disease and stroke who also walked the runway and shared their personal stories highlighting the need for women to make their own heart health a priority.

Inspirational leaders taking to the the runway this night included: Zahra Al-Harazi (CEO, id8 Strategies, UNICEF Canadian Ambassador) wearing designer Jovalene Fox; Caroline Gault (writer, editor, brand fashion journalist and brand director of content and community, Poppy Barley) wearing Nicole Campre; Manjit Minhas (CEO and co-founder of MINHAS Breweries and Dragon’s Den star) wearing Lauren Bagliore; Wendy Belanger (owner  of Influence Salon) wearing Natasha Lazarovic; Kiki Buttignol (heart attack  survivor and 2017 Ambassador) wearing  Angela Dale; Ellen Dilawri (Dilwari Group/philanthropist) wearing  Malika Rajani; Beth Reimer-Heck, Q.C. (Borden Ladner Gervais LLP) wearing Marina Ortman; Michelle Salt (Canadian Paralympics-snowboarding) wearing  Tracey Ward Kerr; Kathy Heffernan (director of general services, Zedi) wearing Lara Presber; Lisa Murphy (vice-president of Alberta Private Client, ATB) wearing Nicole Rita Tomney; Nadine Brown (Canadian Women’s Foundation/philanthropist) wearing Chantel Traub; Danielle Lappage (Team Canada, wrestling) wearing Maria Orduz; Allison Grafton (president and owner, Rockwood Custom Homes) wearing  Malika Rajani; Ebony Lewis (CSI Leasing Canada) wearing Marsina King; and Sarine Mustapha (senior vice-president, BMO Nesbitt Burns) wearing Mackenzie Jones.

Heartfelt thanks to the scores of guests who supported the event and two thumbs up to Heart Truth co-chairs Shahr Savizi, Jacqueline Tyler and Ashley Tyler. Others in attendance are pictured at right.
