For gardening nuts, this time of the year is akin to the Holy Grail. The coldest February since the Great Depression and a very dry spring could create some challenges as the season unfolds. Time will tell. Don’t let the proliferation of dandelions springing up be your signal to plant annuals in containers. It is still too early and savvy Calgary gardeners choose June 1 as the date to plant. Sure, pansies and other chill-tolerant annuals are hardy enough and will tolerate cooler evenings/mornings. The dinner celebrates the best of everything Italian — from food and wine to culture and camaraderie. The event is not only a ton of fun, but philanthropic as well. In the past 57 years, the association has donated more than $2 million to various athletic, educational and cultural causes, including Inn From the Cold and the Global Italian Festival, to name but two. For those who love fashion, PARKSHOW 2019, presented by Brightside, was just the ticket. The two evening event, held May 24 and 25 at 707 Fifth, was an immersive, cultural event attended by more than 1,000 guests. In celebration of its 11th year, PARK partnered with Export Quebec to bring Montreal style to Calgary, helping bridge the gap between the western and eastern fashion industries. Together, Export Quebec and PARK featured six of Quebec's top designers on the PARKSHOW runway as well as a series of pop-up shops featuring: Eliza Faulkner; Léonie Daignault-Leclerc of Gaia and Dubos; Iris Setlakwe; Judith Desjardins of BODYBAG by Jude; Andy Long Hoang and Tinashe Musara of WRKDEPT; and Marie-Eve Proulx of Odeyalo. In April 1999, prostate cancer treatment, education, care and awareness in southern Alberta took a quantum leap forward. The opening of Calgary's Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC) created a one-stop shop whereby patients could access myriad resources in one place. Brainchild of urologist Dr. Bryan Donnelly, the centre was funded entirely with donor dollars. A dedicated board, headed up by Terry O'Callaghan and the centre's first executive director — Phyllis Kane — worked tirelessly stewarding the growth of the first-of-its-kind facility in the country. There are not many people who would celebrate their 80th birthday in such style — all while giving back to the community. Actually, I can only think of one person. And that would be philanthropist, business person, community leader and dear friend Ann McCaig. That she had a health scare mere days before the fabulous fete is testament to her commitment and perseverance. The show must go on — and it most certainly did! How befitting that earlier in the day, McCaig was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Mount Royal University. There could not have been a better birthday present. Read More
